Babies were designed to be born! For this very purpose, their skull bones are not yet fused together and have space between them so they can overlap, reducing the circumference of the head during birth. Afterward, they soon return to normal.
Babies were made to be born without forceps, vacuum, or surgery. Of course when the baby is in an optimal position in the womb, labor is naturally more comfortable and efficient. Knowledge of this and how to encourage it is important and you can read more about it in Wise Childbearing.
Using upright positions is one of the best ways for a woman to open and allow her baby to be born. Having a woman flat on her back may be easier for her caregiver, but this position also collapses the pelvis, making it less able to perform its job the way it was designed to. This also is not what is most comfortable for the mother!
Incredibly, a woman’s body will give birth whether or not she is even aware of it! There are reports of women giving birth undetected when they were in a comatose state. It did not require any thought-process at all!
In fact getting our minds out of the way, once we have educated ourselves and made good decisions for our care, so that we can just let our bodies do the work, is one of the best things we can do!
